Take the Nassau University Medical Center’s Diabetes Self-Management Education Course, which offers a coordinated approach to disease management in order to control diabetes and prevent complications. 

The course is a 5-week series of classes available during the morning and evening beginning mid-October. You must register for the class to attend. To register, call Tenekia Lindsay at 516-572-6573 or email her at tlindsa1@numc.edu. 

The following topics will be covered in the Diabetes Self-Management Course:

• How to manage diabetes on a day-to-day basis 
• How to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes 
• How to eat for health & how to read labels

You will receive 3 Cookbooks when you complete the 5-week series. 

Diabetes is a disease that impairs the body’s ability to process sugar, fat and protein in food. The disease affects millions of Americans and is affecting an increasing number of people because it is often brought on by many of today’s diets that are high in sugars, starches and fat, and by life-styles that lack physical activity.

The Serenity of Second Chances - Amy Wiener, Patient

Nine years ago Amy Wiener was rendered unconscious and close to death in a serious car accident.  But her bad luck had a silver lining, in that her near-fatal mishap occurred across the street from NuHealth, where doctors reacted quickly to save her life.  Amy remained in the hospital for a month, and took the better part of a year to get back on her feet.  Now pain-free for four years, she teaches third grade—and looks forward with anticipation to her coming marriage.

Congratulations to Satish Kadakia, MD at NuHealth System, for being included in the top 50 smartest neurologists in the United States!

Dr. Kadakia is chair of the neurology department at Nassau University Medical Center. Over 8,000 physicians participated with their colleagues in a daily quiz given by the Smartest DocTM, and Dr. Kadakia ranked in the Top 50. 

President and CEO of NuHealth System, Arthur Gianelli, recognized Dr. Kadakia for his accomplishment, stating “Congratulations to Dr. Kadakia on this achievement. NuHealth System is proud to have Dr.Kadakia on staff. Dr. Kadakia completed his residency and fellowship in neurology with special competency in child neurology at NUMC from 1986 until 1989. Then, he became an attending physician in neurology and Director of the Muscular Dystrophy Clinic and the Neuro-Muscular Clinic at NUMC. In 2002, he became chair of the neurology department.

NuHealth’s latest addition to local health centers is South Ocean Care, a multi-medical specialty and dental facility that provides a safe and comfortable environment for all patients. 

South Ocean Care accepts Medicaid, Medicare and other insurance plans, and has Spanish-speaking employees to accommodate those who don’t speak English.

The NuHealth Foundation Annual Heroes Gala will be held on Wednesday, October 26^th at 6:00pm at the beautiful Oheka Castle in Huntington, NY.

The “2011 Heroes in Health Gala” will celebrate the staff, patients and recent accomplishments throughout the NuHealth System.

Deidra Parrish Williams, NuHealth Foundation’s executive director says, “it is important for us to celebrate our accomplishments and introduce more Long Islanders to the vital role that NuHealth plays. Our gala gives us that opportunity.”

 

The NuHealth System includes Nassau University Medical Center(NUMC), A. Holly Patterson Extended Care, and a network of Family Health Centers.  In the last couple of months, NuHealth opened a sophisticated new Emergency Department, arguably the most advanced on Long Island.  A new state of the art amphitheatre was unveiled, providing residents a modern, well-appointed space for ongoing training.  

The Bariatric Department at NUMC earned Center of Excellence status and three of NuHealth’s family HealthCenters received the highest designation possible for their standards of care.  Additionally, modernization efforts have breathed new life throughout the campus.

“The NuHealth System’s impact on the Long Island region is immense, from economic development to health care. We are working to get more people and businesses supporting its future,” said chairman of  NuHealth Foundation’s Board of Directors, Paul Tonna.

According to a recent press release on NuHealth.net, 3 out of 4 NuHealth System Family Health Centers received the highest designation of Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Homes. Level 3 is the highest designation under guidelines by the National Committee for Quality Assurance and the NYS Department of Helath.

NuHealth’s Family Health Centers in Roosevelt, Elmont and NewCassel received the designation, and the fourth location in Hempstead is expected to receive Level 3 in the near future. Currently, Hempstead is a Level 2 Patient Centered Medical Homes.

A Patient Centered Medical Home is defined as “a model of care where each patient has an ongoing relationship with a personal physician who leads a team that takes collective responsibility for patient care,” (NuHealth.net). The AHRQ defines a medical home as “not simply a place but a model of primary care that delivers care that is: patient centered, comprehensive, coordinated, accessible and continuously improved through a systems based approach to quality and safety,” (NuHealth.net). This is  a distinguished honor for NuHelath System to receive.

New Study Reveals a Link Between Liposuction and Decreased Risk in Cardiovascular Diseases!

A recent study has found a link between liposuction and cardiovascular disease. 

Triglycerides, the fats found in the blood, have been linked in studies to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Now liposuction is found to reduce these levels of fats, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

According to an article published by MSNBC, within three months of liposuction, patients’ triglyceride levels had dropped “an average of 43%, according to a report presented today at the annual meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in Denver.”

The study looked at 322 consecutive patients, 270 women and 52 men, who had liposuction surgery or a tummy tuck. 78% of the patients’ were in the “normal to overweight range,” which is why the study came as a shock to most.

The study also showed a decrease in the numbers of white blood cells circulating in the blood, suggesting that the removal of fat is reducing inflammation, which is also “thought to be involved in the development of cardiovascular disease, “(MSNBC).
