The Continuing Medical Education Committee's (CME) mission, with the support of Nassau Health Care Corporation will strive for excellence in patient care, education and research. We will strive to provide and support a wide range of high quality CME programs for the physician and allied health professionals in an ideal learning environment. The core foundation of our programs will be based on the latest accepted standards of care within the various fields of medicine, as well as scientific advancements in the study and practice of medicine. Our programs will foster safe, cost effective patient care with optimal outcomes, strong patient รข€“ physician relationships, and essential ties to the community. As a clinical campus for two medical schools, we will provide continuing education to its associates and community health professionals. As we strive to be the premier source of continuing education and ongoing training for physicians, we will be facilitators for nearby health institutions and the core of sponsorship for community programs.

Goals

  • To meet the professional, ethical and academic standards as required by the Accreditation Council for  Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and the American Medical Association (AMA).

  • To promote accepted standards of care, including the latest scientific developments, both locally & regionally,  through interactive Internet activities, satellite broadcasting and video conferencing.
  • To assist nearby healthcare institutions with program development and the accreditation process.
  • To foster multi-disciplinary relationships among the professionals in order to provide excellent service to the  patient, the general public and outlying communities.
  • To assess continuing medical education needs based on an annual survey, QA recommendations, departmental  input, Ethics and other Committees of the Medical Staff Office.

Nassau University Medical Center sponsors a large number of continuing medical education programs, which generally run from September through June. Practicing physicians and other health care providers in virtually every specialty benefit from weekly lectures and daylong topical programs sponsored by the Medical Center each year. Faculty include our own and distinguished visiting professors. Most of these programs are available without cost to participants.

NuHealth Rolls Out Drug Discounts

Amid consumers’ ongoing problems affording prescription medications, the NuHealth System has implemented a trio of programs, including collaborations with drug stores, to lower the cost or provide free prescriptions for the needy.
The East Meadow-based parent of Nassau University Medical Center over the past year launched three programs designed to provide cheaper, or free, medications to those who qualify.
“We want to ensure that our vulnerable patients receive continued, affordable access to low cost medication,” NuHealth CEO Arthur A. Gianelli said.
The cost of prescription medications has long been a problem for many patients, particularly those who lack insurance and.
“Access to medications is a challenge to many of the patients we serve,” said Dr. Steven J. Walerstein, NuHealth’s executive vice president for medical affairs and medical director. “Our approach should help address this issue.”
NuHealth, in its most recent part of what Gianelli called a “three-pronged approach,” as of June 13 began  collaborating with Walgreens, which offers prescription medications to outpatients at a reduced cost through the federal “340B” drug pricing program.
The discounts are available to patients receiving treatment at NUMC’s outpatient center and one of NuHealth’s Federally Qualified Health Centers in Roosevelt, Hempstead, Westbury, Elmont and Freeport.
Karl Meehan, Walgreens’ vice president of health systems programs, said “this new relationship with NuHealth” will let Walgreens provide “convenient access to deeply discounted prescriptions” at 21 Walgreens pharmacies, including five 24-hour locations, on Long Island.
The federal government through its 304B program provides discounted drugs at thousands of facilities, certified by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as “covered entities.”
NuHealth in April began offering a SampleMD Program, providing patients with coupons to obtain free prescription medication from seven days to a month in pharmacies.
Marcelle Levy-Santoro, Nassau University Medical Center’s director of pharmacy, said the hospital became the first “demonstration site for Long Island” for this system. “I believe the program could have a great impact toward improving compliance and health care outcomes for patients in need,” he said.
Rochester, Mich.-based OPTIMIZERx Corp. developed SampleMD to let physicians print and electronically distribute prescription trial vouchers, co-pay coupons and other patient information from their computers.
Merck & Co., Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Genentech, Abbott Laboratories, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals., Sunovion Pharmaceuticals and Warner Chilcott Co. all work with SampleMD.
NuHealth last summer also launched its own Patient Assistance Program in which pharmacy staff provide medications free for eligible patients in the medical center’s service area. Gianelli said the hospital already provided about $600,000 in free medications through that initiative.
“For those who have no means of paying for their medications, NuHealth will process them [through the Patient Assistance Program] and help to obtain free medications for an indefinite period of time,” Gianelli said.

NuHealth's Roots Go Deep Into Long Island's History

Although NuHealth is a new name in regional health care, its roots go deep into Long Island's history. What began in 1935 as Meadowbrook Hospital — a 200-bed, general hospital in then-rural East Meadow, New York — has become part of a unique health organization with multiple centers of care and a commitment to deliver excellent essential care to everyone, at every stage of life.
Following a series of epidemics in the early decades of the 20th century, concerned citizens petitioned Nassau County to build "a public general hospital for the care and treatment of the sick in the County of Nassau". In early 1931, Nassau purchased a 75-acre site in the geographic center of the county, at a cost of $95,625. Over the next four years, the original four-story main building with its twin solariums, as well as eight outbuildings, rose from the potato farms of the Hempstead Plains. It would be the best equipped hospital in the county, and it bore what was a hefty price tag in the day — the buildings themselves cost almost $1.6 million, and the equipment and furnishings added another $178,000. On July 15, 1935, Meadowbrook Hospital finally admitted its first patient.
At that time, Nassau's entire population only just topped 300,000. During its first year of operation, Meadowbrook Hospital's staff of 330 treated fewer than 150 people a day as inpatients, seeing 560 patients in the emergency room and 813 in ambulatory patient clinics. But as the area developed, the hospital's proximity to the new and booming postwar community of Levittown ensured it an increasingly important role in Nassau's growth. The hospital expanded several times throughout the 40's and 50's, and celebrated its silver anniversary in 1960 with a two-story addition and the germ of an idea: to become a complete tertiary care, teaching medical center serving the needs of a population which reached one million that year. But it would be ten more years before Meadowbrook Hospital became the Nassau County Medical Center, and another four before its crowning achievement: the February 1974 opening of the 19-story, 1,000,000-square foot Dynamic Care Building…still Nassau's tallest building, and a familiar Long Island landmark.
More than the region's "safety net" hospital, NCMC became Nassau's premier Level I Trauma Center, and continued to add programs and services to meet the public's needs, including the county's only complete, state-of-the-art burn center. It also has a strong educational commitment, and has provided thousands of young physicians, nurses and other health care professionals with the opportunity to begin their careers working alongside experienced, talented professionals in a high-volume, fast-paced medical center. Today, the hospital, renamed the Nassau University Medical Center in acknowledgement of its academic associations, is affiliated with the North Shore/LIJ Health System, the Health Sciences Center of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine and the soon-to-open Hofstra University School of Medicine.
In early 1997, Nassau County and New York State worked to create a new public benefit corporation that would provide a more comprehensive approach to the region's public health planning. Governed by an independent Board of Directors, the Nassau Health Care Corporation was charged with managing the operations of Nassau University Medical Center as well as the county-run A. Holly Patterson Extended Care facility, the infirmary at the County Jail, and the county's neighborhood health clinics. On September 29, 1999, the newly assembled Board of Directors held their first official meeting.
Today, Nassau Health Care Corporation is making good on its promise and entering its second decade with a renewed purpose — and a new name that honors both its past and its new vision for health care delivery in the region. As NuHealth, this 1,200-bed health care system is moving toward a new model of care that emphasizes excellent essential hospital and ambulatory services, primary care in the community, shared responsibility for wellness, a continuum of care and integrated delivery of specialty services. And a short look at some of its recent accomplishments makes one thing clear: NuHealth isn't just talking change. It's taking action to bring better care and coverage to more people than ever before.

                                                                  By any measure, the last few years have been marked by solid financial results and expansive growth for NuHealth.  We demonstrably improved the quality of care we provide our patients, as measured by numerous awards and citations.  We strengthened our academic standing and our ability to attract the best physicians and staff.  We made significant progress in modernizing our facilities and laying the groundwork for substantial real estate development now and into the future.  We extended our ongoing alliance with the North Shore-LIJ Health System.  And as we celebrate our 75th anniversary in 2010, we move forward with a new name—and with it, a commitment to deliver great essential health care to everyone, at every stage of life.
                                                                                                                              I’m proud to report that, for the first time since its creation in 1999 as a public benefit corporation, NuHealth ended the year 2009 in the black with a surplus of $804,000. The ongoing sustaining initiatives that we’ve implemented over the past decade have improved our bottom line to provide financial stability, demonstrating that our strategic plan—which includes investments designed to modernize our facilities and improve the quality of care we provide our patients—have produced positive results.
NuHealth’s four-year modernization plan, funded in part with $93.9 million from the Nassau County Tobacco Securitization Program and New York State HEAL grants, has helped with a number of major construction projects.  These include a new emergency department, A. Holly Patterson nursing home, health centers in Roosevelt and Hempstead, and a veteran’s outpatient center, as well as renovations at the Nassau University Medical Center.
Thinking Big
Changing our name to NuHealth was much more than just a matter of cosmetics.  It sends a signal that we’re making significant changes to our system, at a time when the landscape of health care is changing dramatically in the United States. To that effect, NuHealth is in the midst of a successful turnaround that began four years ago.  This turnaround is being fueled by a number of factors, among them funding that previously was not available, our aforementioned carefully constructed and well-executed strategic plan, and leadership across the board that believes in the system and what it can become.
As a public institution, NuHealth faces a number of challenges that are not shared by many other health care providers.  In particular, the demographics of the local community we serve in Nassau County mandate their own set of challenges.  More than half of our patients are on Medicaid, and there’s a preponderance of such afflictions as obesity, diabetes and other diseases associated with lower-income communities.  Combine this with the challenges we face due to an evolving health care scenario on both the national and local level, and it’s clear that the time for change had come.
Given this scenario, NuHealth is working hard to keep in step with—and in some cases, set the pace for—the changing paradigm of health care.  One of the ways we’re doing that is by developing a truly integrated system that eliminates redundancy and isolated pieces of information.  A concerted effort to improve communications among departments, streamline our operations and migrate to electronic medical records is helping to improve efficiency and maximize profits.  In addition, we continue to build and extend coordinated care networks that reach out to the community, include participating physicians outside of NuHealth, and help to provide better care to our patients throughout every stage of their lives.  This truly is a new way of doing things.  Hence our tagline: NuHealth—Together through life.
Together With North Shore-LIJ
NuHealth’s clinical integration with the North Shore-LIJ Health System is a good example of this philosophy in action.  Begun several years ago, this is a partnership that continues to flourish and expand its boundaries by integrating quality standards and establishing shared best practices. Much of the health care that NuHealth provides is of the “bread and butter” variety.  But in cases where highly specialized medical disciplines that are not among our resident capabilities are required, we can turn to North Shore-LIJ to supplement our services and provide a true continuity of care.
Numerous examples underscore this integration in action.  In conjunction with North Shore-LIJ, we’ve upgraded our cardiology capabilities to include defibrillator therapy and improvements to our heart failure services.  We now have a new full-time neurosurgeon on staff, contracted through North Shore-LIJ.  We’re in the process of jointly hiring a new pediatric cardiologist who will split time between both health systems to provide care for high-risk pregnancies that involve fetuses with heart problems.  We’re also integrating our pathology services, searching for a new department chairperson and building a blood bank service.  And in anesthesiology, we’re contracting with an independent group that also works with the North Shore-LIJ health system. All of these efforts merely mark the latest steps in building on a strong foundation of partnership and integration, raising the bar for NuHealth in particular and health care in general.
In closing, we’re excited about our prospects moving forward; the narrative of this report goes into more detail in describing the many steps we’re taking to effect positive change. In the end, health care is all about people, and we’re fortunate to have many outstanding physicians, nurses and staff members who are helping to shape the contours of NuHealth.  On their behalf, I want to thank the state and local governments, along with our many generous donors, for their continued support.  And I want to renew our pledge to our patients and community: simply put, we believe everyone has the right to great health care.   And we intend to provide it.
